Mary Barry, born Bell, was always very close to her sister Anne. They grew up together in the Vicary in Windlebridge, and they both married officers of the Windle Garrison and moved to Windleport to live with their husbands in the Windleport Castle. Annes death, while being pregnant with her first child, was devastating for Mary.
The Castle could be a very cold and lonely place, even if her cousins, Maureen Hunter and Joanna Arrow, often came by to try to console her. Her own pregnancy was of course also both a comfort and a horror - why would she be luckier than her dear sister? Why wouldn't the same happen to her and her unborn?
When she had these dark thoughts she often climbed the stairs to enjoy the view from the tower.
She also found comfort in strolling in the Castle Gardens and the Castle Park, enjoying the sunshine and meeting her neighbours. The Lennox sisters were also very kind to her.
She was very careful to follow everyones advise and eat well, rest a lot, and one beautiful spring day she gave birth to two wonderful little girls, Anne (of course!) and Alice.
